Sustainable Energy Carriers and Innovative Propulsion Systems in a Circular Economy

was taking place on November 14th and November 15th in Palais Pálffy in Vienna's City Center.

Eco-Mobility was a two-day conference on competences and up-to-date developments. High-level keynote speakers and experts reported on activities and strategies in the field of the conference topic. The Austrian automotive sector was very well represented by the A3PS members and other stakeholders. The international conference brought over 140 Austrian and international experts to Vienna, who presented current R&D activities and discussed future drive and mobility solutions to meet climate goals with the participants.

The 19th A3PS conference was opened by Dr. Andreas Dorda, Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology who founded A3PS in 2006. It was an emotional moment, since it was his last conference opening before his retirement. A3PS representatives took the opportunity to honor Dr. Andreas Dorda for his dedication and handed over a lifetime conference ticket together with a sculpture during the social evening event. 

Conference Chair Dr. Michael Nöst moderated the keynote session on day 1 with Prof. Junji Inukai from University of Yamanashi who presented the Hydrogen Situation in Japan, Dr. Markus Schermann of BRP-Rotax Vienna with Next Gen EDU for Powersports Vehicle and Günther Lichtblau of Umweltbundesamt who talked about Austria’s Scenarios for a Sustainable Energy Supply. 

The 4 specialist sessions were moderated by members of the conference committee. Prof. Werner Sitte moderated Session 1: Sustainable Energy Carriers and Dr. Christian Chimani moderated Session 2: Circular Economy and the last keynote of day 1 by Dr. Josipa Petrunic of CUTRIC. 

The second conference day again started with a keynote session moderated by Prof. Peter Prenninger. Prof. Michael Harasek of TU Vienna gave insights to production and import strategies of green hydrogen followed by Dr. Rahul Gopalakrishnan of ABEE who talked about green manufacturing of batteries in EU. Dr. Sunita Satyapal of DoE USA presented the US clean hydrogen strategy via video.

After the specialist session on the topics of Session 3: Advanced Propulsion Systems moderated by Prof. Thomas Lauer, Prof. Bernhard Brandstätter chaired Session 4: Environmental Impact.

The programme with high-level speakers covered:

1. Potential sources of renewable energy
2. Efficiency of energy conversion of renewable energy to drive power
3. Circular Economy of batteries, plastic, metals and the problems and limits of carbon capture for a real circular economy
4. The role and importance of politics with Canada and the US as example
5. Potential of different powertrain technologies for different vehicles for efficiency improvements and CO2 emission free mobility
6. The effect of measures taken on air quality and how to further improve tests considering “new” sources of emissions such as emissions from tires and breaks 

Young scientists had the opportunity to present their research in short pitches and in a poster exhibition. The posters were introduced by the authors in short pitches moderated by Prof. Werner Sitte and Prof. Thomas Lauer. Our conference participants were convinced of the high quality of the 21 posters. The high turnout of the voting on the audience poster award shows a great interest in the posters. We congratulate Ms. Miljana Vuksanovic, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, who received the audience poster award of Eco-Mobility Conference for her outstanding poster presentation on „Shellac - Application of a Sustainable Biopolymer as a Binder for Si/Gr-Anodes in Li-Ion Batteries“.

Further to interesting presentations, Eco-Mobility 2024 offered the opportunity for discussions and networking. The participants were invited to contribute their ideas and questions in discussion corners to the 4 conference sessions Session 1 - Sustainable Energy Carriers, Session 2 – Circular Economy, Session 3 – Advanced Propulsion Systems, and Session 4 – Environmental Impact.

In the evening of the 1st conference day, discussions and networking were continued with wine, beer and a flying dinner.

We are very much looking forward to to welcome many of the participants at the Eco-Mobility Conference 2025 on November 13-14!
